Measure, improve, and make every drop count
Dodo's Water-Wise Garden Measure, improve, and make every drop count
Ages 4–6
Eco-Friendly Habits and Simple Measurement Learning goal Notice common water waste, compare watering methods, and understand rain collection, root watering, and soil cover. Big question The garden needs water, but the hose keeps dripping. How can we use enough without wasting it? Repeated refrain Catch the rain, water roots, cover soil, and make each drop last. Warm-up Compare pouring water continuously with dripping it slowly into two clear cups. Which method is easier to control? ============================================================ Core scene 01 | The Dripping Hose Dodo sees that the closed hose still drips. She puts a small bucket below it and soon collects quite a lot. Core scene 02 | Measure First Using matching cups, Dodo measures how much leak water collects and asks an adult to repair the hose. Core scene 03 | Weather Can Help Clouds thicken. Dodo checks the forecast and soil before watering and discovers that rain is coming. Core scene 04 | Catching Roof Water An adult connects a covered rain barrel to a safe downspout. Dodo knows the collected water is not for drinking. Core scene 05 | Watering the Roots After the rain, Dodo slowly pours water at the plant roots instead of splashing the stone path. Core scene 06 | A Blanket for Soil Dodo and Squirrel add clean leaves and straw so the sun does not dry the soil too quickly. Core scene 07 | A Cool Morning Is Better They water in the cool morning, giving plants time to absorb water before it evaporates. Core scene 08 | Not Every Day Needs Water Dodo feels below the soil surface. It is still damp, so she saves today's water for a pot that needs it. Core scene 09 | Comparing Two Garden Beds The covered bed stays moister. Dodo records the result and plans to keep comparing. Core scene 10 | One Drop's Long Journey Rain travels from roof to barrel, can, and roots. Everyone repeats the water-wise refrain. ============================================================
The hose still drips after it is closed. What should Dodo do? A. Ignore it B. Tell an adult and collect the leak until repair (correct) C. Take the hose apart herself
A child tells an adult and can catch the water temporarily. An adult handles the repair.
Which watering method saves more water? A. Spray the whole stone path B. Slowly water plant roots with a can (correct) C. Leave the hose running for play
Sending water straight to roots reduces water flowing to places that do not need it.
Can you drink water from a rain barrel? A. Yes B. No; use it only as an adult directs (correct) C. Taste a little to find out
Collected rain may contain dust and microbes. Children must not drink it. Extension activity Keep a three-day plant chart with symbols for weather, soil moisture, and whether watering is needed. Teacher note Children must not drink collected rainwater or handle buckets and tools alone. Discuss using water as needed, not leaving plants thirsty.
